Speaker Xhaferi survives no confidence vote
Skopje, 1 July 2022 (MIA) - MPs just before midnight rejected 61-43 a no-confidence motion, filed by the opposition party VMRO-DPMNE against Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi. Throughout the day-long debate in Parliament, opposition lawmakers accused Xhaferi of violating provisions of the Constitution and the Parliament's Rules of Procedures, of lacking the capacity to lead parliamentary sessions and to cooperate with opposition lawmakers. According to the opposition, the Speaker is racking up scandals frequently as of late, such as locking up MPs in the plenary hall and hurling insults at members of the parliamentary staff. The parliamentary majority, which had announced it would reject the no-confidence motion, said the opposition by filing such a motion was attempting to come to power as soon as possible. Calling the move "inappropriate", they insisted that the Speaker should continue to be at the helm of the legislative house. They also criticized the opposition in Parliament for blocking and obstructing. After MPs rejected the motion, Speaker Xhaferi said he will keep working not to allow the legislative house to be "usurped" vowing he will continue to communicate with all MPs. "Thank you to those who voted for me to be ousted and to those who voted against the motion. The assembly will continue to work, the citizens are those who will make an assessment, because we all make mistakes. Through my actions, I will not allow this house, that belongs to the people, to be usurped," Xhaferi said. VMRO-DPMNE MPs submitted the no-confidence motion on May 30.
