Slaveski - Rokas: Price stability remains central bank's priority

Skopje, 26 June 2025 (MIA) - Current economic trends and effects of global developments on the European and national economy, with a focus on the latest developments in the Middle East were in the focus of the meeting of National Bank Governor Trajko Slaveski and European Union Ambassador Michalis Rokas on Thursday.

The meeting also tackled the role of the central banks in the management of inflation. World markets are facing volatility due to the continued geopolitical tensions. This is an important factor, especially for small and open economies such as the Macedonian, where a large portion of the products are imported, while food and energy have a large share in total consumption, the National Bank said in a press release.

Governor Slaveski said the current setup of the monetary policy fits the economic curcumstances, considering the risks of extenal and domestic developments. He added that the bank will monitor the trends and undertake all measures by using all instuments at disposal to maintain the stability of the exchange rates and prices.

Interlocutors also highlighted the importance of the country's accession to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) as a strategic step for economic and financial convergence with the EU, a move that is expected to significantly impact the competitiveness, financial inclusion and modernization of the domestic financial system, reads the press release.
