Skopje, 3 June 2025 (MIA) - The resolution on Macedonia, passed by the Bulgarian Parliament, is insulting and from the outset prevents joint progress through dialogue, President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova told journalists on Tuesday.
“There have been many such resolutions, memoranda and they are all referencing them. Of course, it is insulting to do something like that since it prevents joint progress through dialogue from the outset. The essence of the Preamble in the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness is to help each other. You can help someone through understanding. I don’t think this is okay. Any other country would respond with a similar declaration in its own Parliament,” the President stressed.
The President added she expects the European Parliament to back the Report which “guarantees the Macedonian identity and Macedonian language”. “Otherwise, this will reflect very poorly on the EP’s democratic capacity,” she said.
“Of course, I expect support, but to be honest, I didn’t expect that in the 21st century, in the European Parliament, I would read or hear certain amendments questioning someone’s identity. This is an unknown phenomenon, especially considering you are sitting in an institution that is part of the EU, whose fundamental, constitutive documents, such as the Treaty on the EU, the Lisbon Treaty, and the Charter of the Fundamental Rights, guarantee respect for national and cultural identity, human dignity and integrity. This is shocking. But I expect the report to be backed,” Siljanovska-Davkova stressed.
Siljanovska-Davkova was not able to say whether she will meet with her Bulgarian counterpart at the upcoming NATO Summit in The Hague.
