Shtip marks 82nd anniversary of deportation of Jews to death camp

Shtip, 10 March 2025 (MIA) – The Municipality of Shtip and the Jewish community on Monday honored 535 Jews from Shtip, who were killed in the Treblinka death camp, with a procession of the living, a wreath laying ceremony at the monument of deported Shtip Jews and a visit to the Jewish cemetery.

The memory of the 535 Jews from Shtip, who were deported and killed in Treblinka camp, is still alive 82 years after that faithful night between 10 and 11 March, said Pepo Levi, President of the Jewish Community.

“Macedonia with great respect is remembering the 7,144 Jews deported from Bitola, Shtip and Skopje. Yesterday, we paid respect to the Bitola Jews and today, we’re commemorating 535 Shtip Jews, deported to Treblinka. Tomorrow, respect will be paid to the Skopje Jews at a joint commemoration at the Skopje Holocaust Museum,” announced Levi.

Shtip Mayor Ivan Jordanov said the day when Stip Jews had been deported to the death camp should never be forgotten.

“We mark the day that should never be forgotten, which should be teaching us a lesson that there should be more tolerance, coexistence and a society for all regardless of one’s ethnic, religious or any other origin,” said Jordanov.

Ministry officials, a Parliament delegation and representatives of state and local institutions and political parties laid wreaths at the monument honoring the deported Jews from Shtip.
