Rosencrantz: Bilateral issues shouldn’t stand in the way, Sweden to support country’s EU path

Skopje, 14 March 2025 (MIA) - It is very important that you focus on what you yourself can do, implement the really needed reforms, since ultimately, that is what it is all down to, judiciary reforms, fundamentals, or something else very important, so, continue. My message generally is that we don’t want bilateral issues to stand in the way of a merit-based process, Swedish Minister for European Affairs, Jessica Rosencrantz said in an interview for Agenda 35.

“Throughout history we’ve seen that solutions can be somehow found for bilateral issues, constructive work must be done on this, but ultimately, again, the process is down to the reforms that you, yourself have to do. Sweden promises it will be your supporter, and we will do everything we can to help you,” Rosencrantz said.

The Minister stressed that bilateral issues shouldn’t stand in the way.

“What we are pushing for is also an easier enlargement process. Of course, all countries need to agree to accept new members in the end. But every decision on opening a chapter, closing a chapter, opening or closing a cluster, I think we should move from consensus towards what we call a qualified majority, so the process is made simpler, and I know this is something the Commission is reviewing,” Rosencrantz said.
