Skopje, 28 December 2023 (MIA) - National Transplantation Coordinator Maja Mojsova Mijovska said organ donation should be a state strategy, adding that a state, regardless of who is in power, should directly invest and build that system. She noted that transplantation is not an easy process at all.
"It is not easy, no matter how one looks at it. We get overwhelmed with emotions, but it all comes down to the end result, make life possible for someone. Transplantation in itself is the pinnacle of a healthcare system," Mojsova Mijovska told Telma TV.
The enthusiasm still holds on, she added, but we won't last in the long-run.
"Organ donation is a state strategy, and one of the recommendations is for the state to directly invest and build the system, whoever comes to power should continue to build in this area," said Mojsova Mijovska.
According to her, many educational campaigns are needed for the population to become familiar with the process of organ donation.
"In the European countries, campaigns come first, then the results follow. Unlike in our country, we started the other way around, we started with the heart transplant that resonated everywhere, we set up organ donation, but as you see, we still don't have a campaign. There should be education of the citizens, especially the young people who will create some future policies. Unfortunately, not even medical students learn about organ donation. These are many aspects in education that we lack. A "donate an organ" type of campaign does not call anything to the citizens' minds, it is a process that is recognized by everyone and everywhere, but the process must be explained," Mojsova Mijovska said.
