Opposition activists block Belgrade traffic alleging election fraud

Budapest, 29 December 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Mostly young demonstrators blocked a road junction in Belgrade on Friday with 15 tents in protest at alleged election fraud.

They said they wanted to hold out for at least 24 hours in front of the building of the Ministry of State Administration and Local Self-Government, Serbian media reported.

The demonstrators, who responded to a call by the student organization Borba, are demanding the disclosure of the electoral registers.

They accuse the government controlled by President Aleksandar Vučić of having ensured that masses of government supporters who do not live in Belgrade were able to take part in local elections by registering at bogus residences in the capital. Vučić has denied the allegations.

Parliamentary elections were held in Serbia on December 17, and local elections were held simultaneously in many places, including Belgrade.

Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) won victories in the elections, but the presidential party's success in Belgrade was only narrow. The opposition and election researchers have complained of electoral fraud.
