NATO ministers to prepare crunch talks on defence spending

Antalya, Turkey, 14 May 2025 (dpa/MIA) - NATO foreign ministers are to gather on Wednesday evening in the Turkish city of Antalya for the last scheduled round of high-level talks ahead of the alliance's upcoming summit in June.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is to host the two-day event which is expected to focus on defence spending and the future of European security.

NATO leaders are expected to agree on a new spending goal at the alliance's summit next month in The Hague, with US President Donald Trump having repeatedly demanded that other NATO allies step up their defence expenditure drastically.

Currently NATO members are committed to spend at least 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP), with some still spending less.

European NATO allies are also faced with the fallout of the US administration's reversal on support for Ukraine since Trump's return to the White House and its implication for Europe's security architecture.

US Foreign Secretary Marco Rubio said he will be travelling to Turkey to attend the meeting.

NATO ministers are expected to start consultations over dinner on Wednesday evening before resuming talks on Thursday morning.
