NATO means security and stability, EU signals prosperity, says former US ambassador

Skopje, 28 March 2024 (MIA) - NATO means security and stability while EU signals prosperity. The country's future lies in the EU. The process is difficult and frustrating, it can sometimes be disappointing and you have gone through this, but it is clear this is the best outcome, says former United States ambassador to Skopje, Philip Reeker.

"You will continue to be a sovereign country but you are making adjustments in order to move forward and be part of something bigger while guaranteeing a better future for the country and generations to tome. You are a young European country that has a long history, dating back to the time of (former chancellor of the German Empire Otto von) Bismarck, when the Macedonian issue was discussed in the context of stability on the Balkans. We have the answer to that question - a democratic, multiethnic integrated country in NATO and EU," Reeker told Sitel.

The U.S. diplomat notes that EU integration can be the solution for the problems of corruption and rule of law.

"It does not mean you will eliminate all problems, but going through the negotiating process you reach a level of shared values that reflect on processes. Rule of law is key in that, it is never perfect but it must be the most important aspect. An independent judiciary can ensure fair judgments and citizens want this. I believe this is part of the way forward and the country's future lies in the EU," says Reeker.

He recalls that the road to NATO opened after the "historic Prespa Agreement".

"You are now a partner and ally of the most successful defense alliance. NATO means collective defense, cooperation and democracy. It includes countries that share the same values while defending each other from attacks, such as the Alliance's defense of the U.S. after 9/11. We have been witnessing the importance of this collective defense over the past couple of years since Putin attacked Ukraine. We will celebrate 75 years of NATO at this year's summit in Washington and I am proud that North Macedonia will be there alongside all other allies," says Reeker.

He also refers to the upcoming elections in North Macedonia and the importance of them being fair and democratic.

"I think we can expect this. I believe every citizen should think more about the future rather than the past, learn from the past. The future of this country lies in full EU integration, so we can celebrate as we did with the NATO membership," says Reeker.

He adds that North Macedonia has no better friend than the United States, regardless of the outcome of the U.S. presidential elections later in the year.
