Minister Nuredini: Clean energy is key towards tackling climate change
Skopje, 4 November 2021 (MIA) – Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Naser Nuredini addressed Thursday an event dedicated to Power Post Coal Alliance, held as part of the Climate Change Summit COP26 in Glasgow. North Macedonia is a member of the Power Post Coal Alliance after having pledged to phase out coal, the Ministry said in a press release. Presenting the national ambitions set out in the revised nationally determined contribution to the Paris Agreement, Minister Nuredini said his country aimed at 66% reduction of emissions in the energy sector by 2030. “It seems that climate challenge to a large extent is a challenge for clean energy,” he said. Minister Nuredini also presented the efforts made by the country to diversify the energy mix by investing in renewable energy sources and called on developed countries to offer support to developing countries, including North Macedonia, in achieving successful and just transition. It was announced at COP26 that 27 new members have joined Power Post Coal Alliance, which brings the total to 164 countries, cities, regions and businesses that conduct activities to meet the phase-out target and to cooperate so as to accelerate the global transition from coal to clean energy. Also, 11 financial institutions joined the Alliance today, bringing the total to 33 finance members with over USD$17 trillion in assets.
