Skopje, 3 April 2026 (MIA) – Macedonia will be the first country in the region that will meet the commitment to scrapping additional roaming charges in the EU, Minister of Digital Transformation Stefan Andonovski has announced.
During TV21 interview, he said the citizens wouldn’t have to pay additionally for calls, messages and internet during their trips to EU countries.
“As I’ve promised in terms of roaming – we’ll be the first country that will fulfil the task. It means no additional charges while in the EU. We want to copy the Balkan roaming model in the EU. We’ve done our homework, we’ve sent the text to the EU for an opinion and we’ll pass it in Parliament,” said Andonovski.
Two weeks ago, he added, we received additional questions from the European Union, but the plan remains unchanged and the country is prepared to complete the legislation scrapping roaming charges.
In terms of EU integration, Minister Andonovski said the country isn’t quitting its European path, noting: “Any next step would have to have clear guarantees.”
He said the country is committed to reforms.
“We’re not quitting the EU. As to how much progress we have made in reforms at home, I can say we’re meeting the tasks. Our stance is principled – any change and step by the Macedonian side has to come with a guarantee. Negotiations haven’t been opened, we’re not opening clusters whereas we’re constantly told to make concessions to the detriment of the Macedonian national interests,” said Andonovski.
