Mexhiti: Türkiye important partner in tackling environmental challenges

The Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning said the two ministers discussed opportunities for the enhancement of cooperation in tackling environmental challenges at the meeting.

Skopje, 28 February 2025 (MIA) - First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Izet Mexhiti met Friday with his Turkish counterpart Murat Kurum. The Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning said the two ministers discussed opportunities for the enhancement of cooperation in tackling environmental challenges at the meeting.
“Mexhiti and Kurum agreed that through the signing of a memorandum of cooperation, the two countries will exchange experiences and closely cooperate in sustainable management of industrial waste, mining waste, hazardous waste and medical waste,” the Ministry said.
According to the Ministry, both parties agreed to cooperate in the near future in terms of “managing chemicals, the discovery, analysis and clean up of areas contaminated with hazardous materials and chemicals, in the sense of developing a geographic information systems for the environment and the relevant legislation, protection of the environment and biodiversity in protected areas, as well as the planning, management and promotion of protected areas in the realization of ecotourism activities”.
“To achieve the desired effects, Mexhiti and Kurum agreed to establish programs for study visits by researchers, consultants, experts and members of nongovernmental organizations, as well as the exchange of information and documents on a scientific and technical level in relation to the scientific, development and applicative activities,” the Ministry said.
Minister Mexhiti, as part of his visit to Türkiye, is also expected to meet with the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan. Mexhiti will also accompany Prime Minister Mickoski at the state dinner hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
