MEPSO, KOSTT sign MoC on new interconnection line Tetovo-Prizren

Skopje, 19 June 2025 (MIA) - Heads of electricity transmission system operators of North Macedonia and Kosovo signed Thursday in Skopje a Memorandum of Cooperation over the construction of a new 400kV interconnection line from Tetovo to Prizren.

The project is in line with EU's energy transition goals by 2050 and is nominated as a candidate for an increase of the transmission capacities through the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), the Electricity Transmission System Operator of North Macedonia (MEPSO) said in a press release.

North Macedonia and Kosovo currently have only one interconnection, with ENTSO-E analyses showing that the transmission capacities in Southeast Europe need to at least double.

"The memo signing is a significant step towards strengthening our regional cooperation and development of the electricity transmission network. This project will not only increase the capacity and security of the system but also ensure higher exchange of electricity, while stimulating new investments in renewable energy sources," said MEPSO General Director Burim Latifi.

Kosovo Transmission and System Operator (KOSTT) CEO Shaban Neziri said the memo reaffirms the cooperation between the two countries and their commitment to creating a modern and secure energy infrastructure.

"This project strengthens energy networking in the region and contributes to achieving energy goals in the Western Balkans," noted Neziri.

The project is currently in the stage of planning and technical preparation, whereas start of construction will depend on the finances available and the required alignment with all stakeholders, reads the press release.
