Macedonian poet Mihail Rendzhov dies at 88

Skopje, 8 October 2024 (MIA) -- Prominent Macedonian poet, fiction writer and translator Mihail Rendzhov has died, his son said. He was 88.

 

Rendzhov was born in Shtip in 1936. He had a degree from Skopje's Faculty of Law. He worked as a library science consultant at the St. Clement of Ohrid National and University Library. He was a member of the Macedonian Writers Association since 1965. He was also a member of the Macedonian PEN Center and the first editor of Blesok Poetry.

 

He is the author of "A Migrant of Fire" (poetry, 1965), "Night Growing of the Word" (poetry, 1967), "Where From This Side" (poetry, 1968), "On the Brink of Dreaming" (poetry, 1972), "Fear" (poetry, 1976), "Midnight" (poetry, 1979), "Nerezi" (poetry, 1982), "Auto-da-fé" (poetry, 1985), "Phoenix" (sonnets, 1987), "The Earth. Deluge" (poetry, 1991), "Dreaming Travelling" (children's book, 1991), "He" (long lyrical poem, 1993), "Deck of Cards 33" (poetry, 1994), "The Eternal, the Endless" (poetry, 1996), "I, Oxymoron" (poetry, 1998), "Angela is Dreaming" (choldren's poetry, 1998), "Psalms" (poetry, 2000), "Apocalypse" (drama in verse, 2002), "The Peak. The River. The Sea" (poetry, 2003), "Zachariah and Other Stories" (short stories, 2006), "Galichica" (poetry, 2007), and "Scattered. Collected" (essays/notes, 2008). He has translated many books of poetry, including the Assyrian-Babylonian epic “Gilgamesh”.

 

Rendzhov's many awards include the 1964 Struga Poetry Evenings best unpublished poem award, the 1982 SPE Miladinov Brothers award for best book in Macedonian, the 1965 City of Shtip November award, the 1982 October 11 national award, the 1993 Prlichev Wreath long poem award, the 1999 Aco Shopov award, and the 2004 Racin Award. mr/
