If we conduct EU negotiations right, we could become EU members by the end of the decade, says Marichikj
Skopje, 6 July 2022 (MIA) - As soon as the protocol is fully aligned and agreed with Bulgaria, the document will be published, but the process is in the hands of the Foreign Ministry. We expect the Ministry to present it as a package of document that will be discussed in Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Bojan Marichikj said after Wednesday’s meeting of party working groups in Skopje aimed at reviewing the French proposal for lifting of the Bulgarian veto and opening of EU negotiations. "We've absolutely never hidden anything. Documents are unveiled after they are in some kind of phase in order to be discussed," he said when asked why the protocol with Bulgaria isn't published. Our country aims, Marichikj said, to make sure there are no endless blockades with the European proposal. "If we conduct the negotiations right we could join the EU by the end of this decade," the Deputy PM stressed. He said that participants in the meeting exchanged ideas as to what approach both Parliament and the government should take in the next phase regarding the European proposal. "Even though we have different views on many things, the meeting was held in constructive spirit," Marichikj said. During the meeting, he added, SDSM and the government presented their positions that the proposal meets the expectations of the country. “We also put forward a text with draft-conclusions,” Marichikj told reporters. He also added that VMRO-DPMNE put forward other ideas in relation to possible changes to the negotiating framework. “The first meeting was good and I think we should carry on talking in the coming days on the matter,” Marichikj said. Furthermore, the Deputy PM said the mechanisms for protection of the national identity were explained. “VMRO-DPMNE presented view we’ve already discussed in the negotiating process. If we continue with meetings, I think we can hope for some improvement,” Marichikj said repeating the meeting was held in constructive atmosphere.
