Skopje, 6 December 2023 (MIA) - The Government reviewed and adopted Wednesday the draft-law on pardoning proposed by the Ministry of Justice.

According to the petitioner, the reasons for adoption of a new Law on Pardoning arise from the shortcoming and legal gaps in the existing law, from the aspect of its practical implementation but also specification of certain aspects regulated by the law, the Government said in a press release.

It adds that due to the frequent problems in practice related to the necessity for urgency of proceedings, the new law stipulates deadlines for actions by stakeholders in the pardoning procedure.

In addition, certain titles and terms are terminologically aligned in the new piece of legislation.

One of the most significant changes in the law is that the President can issue a pardon only for an effective sentence and not in the stage of criminal prosecution, said the Government.
