Geer: Reforms to accelerate, process of constitutional amendments to be demystified

Krushevo, 26 May 2023 (MIA) – The implementation of the reforms should accelerate, it is not moving as quickly as we would like. When it comes to the constitutional amendments, the first thing to do is to demystify the entire process. By moving forward, your country will not lose its identity, language or history, said the EU Ambassador to North Macedonia, David Geer, on Friday.

In answer to a journalist’s question over the reform process and the constitutional changes process, the Ambassador said we are living at an exceptional time of history, because of the war in Ukraine, which, actually, means an intensification of the EU enlargement process. The country, according to Geer, has a great chance which it shouldn’t miss.

“If the country wants to join the EU, the reform process should be moving very quickly, which means the reforms need to be implemented very quickly. The pace of their implementation is not as quick as we would like it to be. It has to be very fast, very dynamic and the process requires all stakeholders in the country, including all political countries, to sit down and agree that this is a top priority for the country, so that it can join the EU as soon as possible,” said EU Ambassador Geer.

Regarding the constitutional amendments, the first thing to do, according to Ambassador Geer, is to demystify the entire process.

“The first thing I want to stress, which concerns the constitutional amendments, this is a sovereign decision that should be made by the country. All proposals from the constitutional changes working group should be assessed. By moving forward, your country will not lose its identity, its language or its history. In fact, the experience of the countries who have joined the EU is the complete opposite. As the country moves forward on the EU path, as it strengthens itself as a country, the identity and the language of the country will also strengthen within the EU,” said Geer.

According to the EU Ambassador, North Macedonia has a great chance which should not be missed.

“On the contrary, the country should move forward to the EU as soon as possible, because this is a realistic and achievable goal,” said Geer in answer to a journalist’s question.
