Fight against corruption takes courage, says Aggeler

Skopje, 4 April 2024 (MIA) – The United States Ambassador to North Macedonia, Angela Aggeler, said in an interview Thursday that the fight against corruption in the country takes courage. According to her, now is a great time to ask questions about the fight against corruption since the country is in an election period.

“It takes courage, and I have observed, I know this is obnoxious to some people, I talk about it a lot. I talk about it because I think it has to be addressed. It’s one of those aspects that people talk about and yet there is a sense of resignation,” the Ambassador told TV 21 in the interview.

The Ambassador stressed in the United States it is often said that in a democracy people get the government they deserve and highlighted the need for the citizens to get out and vote.

“It requires people to get out and vote, to ask current questions and to hold people accountable. When I say people, I also mean people who work within the government within the judiciary,” Aggeler said.

Asked if the country “deserved” the Special Prosecutor’s Office, Aggeler said the country needs to have prosecutors, judges, and other officials who would say “enough”.

“There has to be a process whereby individuals are held accountable. And that requires, even within the judiciary, that there are prosecutors, judges, investigators, law enforcement who say ‘Wait, enough. This is wrong, and I am not going to be a part of it’, it has to start with that,” Ambassador Aggeler said.
