Eurostat: Coffee prices surge, morning staple almost a luxury
Skopje, 7 October 2022 (MIA) – A mug of coffee, a daily routine for many, costs Macedonian citizens 18.3% higher than a year earlier. The price of coffee in the EU was 16.9% higher, show Eurostat data for August 2022, compared to the same month last year.
For consumers that drink their coffee with milk and/or sugar, this morning ritual might be even more expensive since the prices of those items increased even more over the last year. The price of fresh whole milk in North Macedonia increased 29%, while the price of sugar increased 58%.
In Eu member countries on the other hand, data show that the price of fresh whole milk increased on average 24.3%. In August 2022, annual inflation for sugar was at +33.4%, with Poland seeing the highest jump in sugar prices of up to 109.2%.
According to the European Union’s statistics office, the prices for coffee, milk and sugar had risen in all EU member countries except Malta.
When it comes to coffee, Finland registered the highest annual inflation at +43.6% in August 2022, followed by Lithuania (+39.9%) and Sweden (+36.7%).
As regards whole fat milk, the highest increases in prices were logged in Lithuania (+50.2%), Croatia (+41.2%) and Estonia (+38.9%).
Sugar, on the other hand, saw the most notable price increase in Poland, up 109.2%, followed by Estonia (+81.2%), Latvia (+58.3%) and Bulgaria (+44.9%).
