ERC issues first BESS licenses
- The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has issued the first licenses for battery energy storage systems (BESS) to company "Energo Solar Systems".
Skopje, 10 October 2025 (MIA) - The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has issued the first licenses for battery energy storage systems (BESS) to company "Energo Solar Systems".
The ERC said Friday the two battery systems have a capacity of 2,600kW, installed within two operational photovoltaic power plants.
ERC president Marko Bislimoski says the issuance of these licenses marks the beginning of a new investment cycle in the energy sector.
"In practice, this means accelerated energy transition by creating a sustainable, efficient and environment-friendly energy system in the country. We expect many owners of photovoltaic power plants to apply for BESS but we also expect interest from companies that would operate their own BESS. This will contribute to safe and credible operation of systems, but also an economically sound and more efficient energy market. Energy storage in time of surplus and its use in times when energy requirements are on the rise is expected to have an impact on reducing total costs in the system," says Bislimoski.
The requirements, the procedure and the documents needed for a BESS license are regulated in the Law on Energy and the License Rulebook.
