Eftimov: Situation in prisons is serious, urgent reforms needed

Skopje, 9 October 2024 (MIA) – Speaking at a round table organized by the Council of Europe in Skopje on Tuesday, State Secretary Dajancho Eftimov highlighted the challenges faced by penitentiary institutions and the need for reforms aimed at improving resocialization and rehabilitation of convicted persons.

Eftimov stressed that the situation is serious, noting that a lot of effort and commitment is needed to establish justice and legal certainty, the Ministry of Justice said in a press release.

"The situation is serious. We are aware that it requires major effort and commitment. We must establish justice and legal security, show that we have values, that we are worthy of a country, and that we are all ready to build a better future for our country together. Reforms in the prison system are more than necessary and the Ministry of Justice and I, as State Secretary, are following up with great attention on all the recommendations from the Committee for the Prevention of Torture noted in its reports, because they are necessary corrective in our pursuit of achieving the developed systems of European countries," Eftimov pointed out.

He underlined that the recommendations in the Committee for the Prevention of Torture's report are being taken very seriously.

"Our work is just beginning, and we must be as committed as possible, because the future depends on us. We will not lie to ourselves that it will be easy. It won't be easy. Maturity and serious commitment are expected on our part. Let's stick to the development plan and fight sincerely, honestly, responsibly - success will then be inevitable and changes will be visible," said Eftimov.
