Skopje, 7 March 2024 (MIA) – Additional Deputy Minister of Interior Mitko Bojmacaliev in an interview with the Serbian newspaper Danas was asked for a comment on the overall security situation in the Republic of North Macedonia, particularly which areas require more attention.

“The overall security situation in North Macedonia can be assessed as stable, but there are certain challenges that require continuous attention and engagement. In this context, particular focus needs to be placed on combating organized crime and corruption, as they erode the rule of law and are essential for protecting democratic values,” Bojmacaliev said.

In this regard, he shared the results of the Ministry of Interior's efforts in combating corruption.

“Clearly, progress is visible, as indicated by the results, according to which the Republic of North Macedonia is ranked 76th on the Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, representing a significant improvement from its previous 85th position in 2022. I can say that as a Ministry, in 2023 alone, we identified over 64 cases of corrupt abuses, uncovered 121 criminal offenses involving a total of 178 perpetrators, resulting in material damages exceeding Mden 350 million. Police investigative role expanded by 50% in 2021 against organised crime and corruption. Under the tenure of former Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski from 2017 to 2023, a total of 44 criminal complaints were filed against 170 individuals and 2 legal entities,” Bojmacaliev said, adding that our strategic partners, the European Union and the United States, acknowledge our strong commitment to judicial reforms and the implementation of systematic reforms through strengthened anti-corruption policies.

“Our priority is to demonstrate that no one is above the law, including officials. Honesty and integrity are our imperatives, and they must triumph over corruption and subservience. As a result, at the governmental level, an interdepartmental body for coordinating anti-corruption activities was set up to coordinate anti-corruption efforts. Additionally, a proposed amendment to the Law on Restrictive Measures aims to formalize all directives and individuals listed under sanctions by the United States and the United Kingdom. This legal framework will prevent them from engaging in public procurement, holding governmental positions, or running for public office. To ensure the enforcement of the provisions within this law, international cooperation channels, particularly INTERPOL, Europol, SELEC, and others, will be utilized. This will facilitate the seamless flow of essential information to secure evidence and execute its responsibilities effectively,” Bojmacaliev said.
