Skopje, 8 November 2024 (MIA) – A commemoration for the writer Olivera Nikolova, who died earlier this week aged 88, will be held Friday at the Association of Writers of Macedonia.

Her body of work leaves a mark not only in our cultural and social surroundings, but also across the world, said the Association.

Born in 1936 in Skopje, she graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje, and worked as a screenwriter for radio and television programs.

Her opus consists of numerous works for children and adults.

She has been a member of the Association of Writers of Macedonia since 1963. 

Her notable children's books include "Zoki Poki", which is considered a classic in Macedonian literature, "The country where one can’t arrive" (awarded the Best Book of the Year at the Struga Poetry Evenings, 1966), "The Friends Bon and Bona" (Award of the Struga Poetry Evenings, 1975), "My Sound" (Yugoslav Award 'Mlado Pokolenje', 1978), "Marko’s Girlfriends", "Loveaches", "Stone Ciphers", "The Crossing is not Lit", "Light Year", etc.

In 1983, she received the 'Zmaj Award', a prominent award from former Yugoslavia, for exceptional accomplishments in the contemporary literature for young people. In 2024, former President Stevo Pendarovski awarded the national Order of Merit to Olivera Nikolova for being one of the most important Macedonian fiction writers. 

Her adult fiction books include "A Day for Summer Holiday", the comedy "Silver Apple", the novels "Narrow Door", "Homeworks", "Adam’s Rib" (Racin’s Award, 2000), "Rositsa’s Dolls" (Novel of the Year, 2004), as well as the book of drama writings entitled "Silver Apple", "Left ventricle", "White smoke", "Small House" (Award nomination Balkanika 2011), etc. ba/nn/
