‘Barren meeting’ of commission on historical issues: Bulgarian co-chair
Sofia, 10 December 2021 (MIA) – Angel Dimitrov, chair of the Bulgarian team in the Joint Commission on Historical Issues, said Friday the two-day meeting of the commission produced no results, MIA reports from Sofia. Dimitrov briefed the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the commission members managed to harmonize the minutes of the 12th meeting that took place at the start of 2021, which is “symbolic”. According to him, “the barren meeting” focused on Tsar Samuel, with historians still stuck in the “10th and 11th centuries”, while adding he feared that the commission’s work would be difficult in 2022. “When you refuse to accept the basic formulation of the Friendship Treaty – joint history – this means you have doubts over the agreement’s application,” said Dimitrov. He said the treaty’s revival required steps in all fields of cooperation, with the joint commission being only one of many.
