Zelensky urges 'lasting peace' before meeting Trump in Washington

Kiev, 18 Augut 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned against half-hearted agreements to end the war in his country shortly before meeting US President Donald Trump in Washington.

"Peace must be lasting," Zelensky wrote on social media platform X.

"Not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East - part of Donbas - and Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack," he added.

Zelensky also pointed out that the "security guarantees" Ukraine received in 1994 had failed to protect the country.

The Ukrainian president said Crimea should not have been given up, "just as Ukrainians did not give up Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv after 2022," adding that Russia must end the war it started.

"I hope that our joint strength with America, with our European friends, will force Russia into a real peace," he continued.

Zelensky also said he had already arrived in Washington, where he is scheduled to meet Trump at the White House on Monday, with European leaders also expected to attend.
