Xhaferi: Parliament cannot elect constitutional judges at this time due to committee obstructions
Skopje, 7 February 2022 (MIA) – The work of the Committee on Election and Appointment Issues is currently obstructed and the Parliament cannot elect constitutional judges at this time, said Speaker Talat Xhaferi in response to a letter by Constitutional Court President Dobrila Kacarska. In the letter, Kacarska voiced concerns after the number of justices has reduced and requiring that four new Constitutional Court justices should be elected in Parliament as soon as possible. The Parliament has been informed on the expiration of the term of the constitutional judges. Considering that the work of the Committee on Election and Appointment Issues is obstructed through circumvention of procedures, the nominations by committee members have not been approved and cannot be discussed at a plenary session. Therefore, the Parliament cannot elect the constitutional judges at this time, which is required to ensure continued functioning of the Constitutional Court, the Speaker’s Office said in a press release.
