Skopje, 19 February 2024 (MIA) – Asked about the recommendation of the Council of Europe for the country to scrap the 2011 Law on Amnesty and process the four Hague cases, caretaker Prime Minister Talat Xhaferi told reporters Monday “the laws have been adopted and the story is closed”.
“I have already answered this, this business is finished in the context of the legislation and the situation in the country. That story is closed, the laws have been adopted,” Xhaferi said.
Political party Democratic Union submitted an initiative Friday to the Constitutional Court over the removal of legal obstacles in order to resume proceedings in the four Hague cases.
The initiative submitted by Democratic Union leader, Pavle Trajanov, requests the scrapping of the authentic interpretation of Article 1 from the Law on Amnesty, which halted proceedings in the four cases.
According to Trajanov, the authentic interpretation is contrary to the Constitution, the Criminal Code and the Geneva Conventions, which state that the statute of limitations doesn’t expire on crimes against civilians.
