Xhaferi: Electoral Code amendments not fully solving document validity issue

Skopje, 8 March 2024 (MIA) - Caretaker PM Talat Xhaferi said Friday the Electoral Code amendments that the Parliament adopted yesterday would not fully solve the problem of the documents' validity during the election process, noting that citizens should be allowed to use old documents without an expiration date.

A transitional provision is set to allow voters whose ID cards or passports expired 9 months before the day of the elections to vote.

"I am not convinced that the problem will be resolved. The documents that have an expiration date older than nine months will not be allowed, which means that the solution is partial. For example, what if the document has an expiration date within the nine months on April 24, but not on May 8? By wanting to make an exception, we are making another by excluding a portion of our citizens," PM Xhaferi told reporters.

He said citizens should vote using old documents regardless of the expiration date.

"The solution should be that all citizens having expired documents be allowed to vote, regardless of the expiration date. Both the Parliament and the Government will have to rethink this issue," underlined Xhaferi.
