Meinl-Reisinger to Gashi: Austria ready to help in talks between North Macedonia and Bulgaria

Skopje, 16 May 2025 (MIA) — Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi hosted Friday Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Beate Meinl-Reisinger in Parliament and, highlighting the friendly ties between the two countries, thanked Austria for the support on North Macedonia's EU accession path, according to an official press release.

Gashi also welcomed the excellent economic relations between the two countries, pointing out that Austria was the largest foreign investor in North Macedonia, the press release from Parliament said.

Speaking about the country's EU integration process, "Gashi confirmed the position that the Republic of North Macedonia is seeking a solution that will make changing the Constitution possible while at the same time guaranteeing that the identity issue and other bilateral issues will not be future obstacles on the country's path to the EU," it said.

The Austrian foreign minister agreed that bilateral relations between the two countries were excellent and expressed her readiness to deepen them further.

In addition, Meinl-Reisinger "sent a sincere message that the Constitution should be changed and the Republic of Austria will do everything in its power to make sure there are no further obstacles to the European integration process," the release said.

"The minister also expressed Austria's readiness to help facilitate potential talks between the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Bulgaria," the release said, adding that Gashi and Meinl-Reisenger both expressed satisfaction with their meeting and noted that they were open to further cooperation. mr/
