Xhaferi – Fajon: North Macedonia’s EU membership by 2030 a realistic goal
Skopje, 18 October 2022 (MIA) – Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi met Tuesday with Slovenia’s Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon.
“Xhaferi extended gratitude for the continuous support of the Republic of Slovenia in the achievement of the two state strategic goals, NATO and EU membership,” the Parliament said in a press release.
Talks also tackled the country’s full alignment with the EU’s foreign, security and defense policy, as clear indication of the country’s unwavwering committment on the path to EU membership.
“With her first official visit to the Republic of North Macedonia in this capacity, when the two countries mark the 30th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the respected Fajon reaffirmed commitment to fully support the country in all fields of mutual interest. In addition, she highlighted the potentials that exist for cooperation on a bilateral level, such as in the field of economy and education, particularly at a time of global changes when measures for solidarity and joint action are more than necessary. She expressed particular satisfaction with the current screening process and the fact that the country has over 40 percent alignement with EU legislation, a fact that makes the set goal of the country's EU membership by 2030 realistic and justified,” reads the press release.
Interlocutors welcomed the upcoming signing of the Frontex agreement in Macedonian language, which, they stressed, confirms that existing fears are unjustified. Regarding the potentials that exist in the diaspora itself, including the student diaspora in Slovenia, interlocutors concluded they should continue to be nurtured and promoted in the future.
Chair of the Parliament Group for Cooperation with the Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia, Aleksandar Veljanoski, Slovenian Ambassador to the country Milan Predan and Secretary General of the Parliament Cvetanka Ivanova also attended the meeting.
