World Book and Copyright Day - April 23

World Book and Copyright Day - April 23

Skopje, 23 April 2023 (MIA) - World Book and Copyright Day, first organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1995, is observed on Sunday - April 23.

World Book Day is an annual event celebrated on April 23. This is a symbolic date in world literature. It is the date on which several prominent authors, William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. This date was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone to access books.

The National and University Library "St. Clement of Ohrid" will organize an event on Monday to mark World Book and Copyright Day. The event will feature reading of excerpts from the epic novel "Don Quixote", as well as an exhibition of books in memory of Justo Jorge Padrón, which will be opened by his widow, Macedonian-born Kleopatra Filipova de Jorge Padrón.

"The National and University Library "St. Clement of Ohrid" has been observing World Book and Copyright Day since the beginning and is coordinator of activities across the country. Professor Ana Stojanoska wrote the Macedonian message for the occasion this year, and UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay's message on World Book and Copyright Day 2023 will also be read at the event. Join in celebrating the importance of books," said the National Library.

The event is organized with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain, the Embassy of Germany and Ars lamina and Ars - studio publishing houses.
