Skopje, 26 May 2023 (MIA) – In 2022 it became evident how important it is to have the knowledge and determination in the field of energy. The plan showed results, and we turned the energy crisis into an opportunity, said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski on Friday.

“Just 12 months ago, the global economy was practically facing a collapse because of the war in Ukraine and because of the lack of fuels on the European continent. In our country we had no shortage of electricity, fuel, heating, food… and there were no restrictions of any kind. We protected both the citizens and the companies. We adopted the largest package of anti-crisis measures for the most vulnerable categories of citizens and in order to maintain the liquidity of businesses in the amount of EUR 760 million, the largest package in the region according to data from the World Bank,” said Kovachevski in answer to an MP’s question at Friday’s Parliament session.

The PM stressed that compared to 2022, the country has recorded an increased production of electricity by 44 percent.

“As a result of that, we managed to provide producers of basic food products and communal enterprises with cheap electricity. We provided cheap electricity for all health and educational institutions, and the price of electricity was not raised for consumers at all. For the 72.000 businesses on the regulated market of electricity, the price even dropped by 20 percent,” said Kovachevski.

The PM said that during the time of VMRO-DPMNE a total of 18 megawatts of renewable sources of energy were installed in the country, while 210 megawatts were installed and connected to the grid just in the past year, which is enough to satisfy the needs of 10 cities in the country with 76.000 households.
