Skopje, 9 September 2024 (MIA) — The draft amendments to the Law on Local Self-Government, which would make it possible for acting mayors to remain in office until the regular local elections in October 2025, will be discussed in Parliament on Wednesday, according to VMRO-DPMNE spokeswoman Marija Miteva.
"We expect support from all political parties," Miteva told a press conference Monday.
Asked whether there was a two-thirds majority and a Badinter majority for the bill, she said the bill should be passed as it was cost-effective.
"We believe that this law is rational and reduces the costs of citizens and the state," Miteva said.
The proposed amendments to the Law on Local Self-Government were submitted to Parliament by the VMRO-DPMNE, Worth It and ZNAM parliamentary coordinators Nikola Micevski, Halil Snopce and Goran Karapejovski a few days ago in a fast-tracked procedure.
If the bill doesn't pass, in line with the current legislation, snap local elections will need to be held in Saraj, Aerodrom and Gostivar by the end of the year. mr/
