Varhelyi says Zaev meeting focused on how to advance EU enlargement by opening accession talks
Skopje, 29 September 2021 (MIA) - We look forward to EU Western Balkans Summit next week in Slovenia. Western Balkans is a key priority for the European Commission, the region’s future is in the EU. We discussed how to advance EU enlargement by opening accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania, says European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi after Wednesday’s meeting with Prime Minister Zoran Zaev.
“Happy to be back to Skopje for a comprehensive discussion with Prime Minister Zoran Zaev. We agreed to quickly start implementing the first flagship projects from Economic and Investment Plan for Western Balkans to boost economic development and convergence of North Macedonia and the region with the EU,” tweeted Varhelyi.
PM Zaev also posted a tweet on the meeting with Varhelyi, saying they openly discussed on several topics, including the Economic and Investment Plan, a truly strong positive incentive for the country.
“We also discussed the preparations for the coming EU-Western Balkans Summit in Slovenia next week, which represents an excellent opportunity for joint discussion. The European path is important for both North Macedonia and the EU, and we are committed to this process,” says Zaev.
