Washington, 12 July 2024 (MIA) - The United States will work with North Macedonia and Greece in maintaining the benefits of the Prespa Agreement, the State Department told Voice of America in Macedonian regarding Athens' reactions to the use of the constitutional name by the new authorities in Skopje.
"The Prespa Agreement was a historic achievement in unlocking the security benefits for South and East Europe. The United States supports this vital agreement, reaffirms the importance of its observance and will work with all sides on maintaining its benefits," says the State Department.
During his stay in Washington for the NATO Summit, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski called the country Macedonia in his public statements and X posts, and used the constitutional name North Macedonia on several occasions during the discussion at the Johns Hopkins University.
In a press conference after the NATO Summit, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said "Greece will not reveal at this moment the weapons it has at its disposal to respond to any potential insistence by the neighboring country’s leadership on this tactic", while reiterating his government’s position that the Prespa Agreement should be fully observed and that the use of the constitutional name within the country is also crucial.
