US says it will not send troops to fight in Ukraine

Washington, 27 February 2024 (dpa/MIA) - The Biden administration has reiterated that it will not send troops to Ukraine.

"President Biden has been clear that the US will not send troops to fight in Ukraine," National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in Washington on Tuesday.

Her remarks came after French President Emmanuel Macron had previously not ruled out the use of Western ground troops in Ukraine.

A $60 billion US aid package for Ukraine is being held up in the US House of Representatives by Republican lawmakers.

"We think the path to victory for Ukraine is for the House of Representatives to pass the national security supplemental so Ukrainian troops have the weapons and ammunition they need to defend themselves and continue to fight courageously for their freedom and independence against Russia’s invasion," Watson said.

The aid package has passed the Democrat-controlled US Senate but so far House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, has refused to bring the bill to the House floor for a vote.
