US rolls back tariffs on Brazilian food imports

Washington, 21 November 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The United States has reversed the tariffs President Donald Trump imposed on Brazil over the country's criminal prosecution of former leader Jair Bolsonaro.

The move lifts an additional import fee of 40% on a wide range of Brazilian food products, including beef, coffee and various fruits, the White House announced on Thursday.

Trump had come under growing pressure over rising food prices in the US.

Washington introduced the extra duties in July after Trump accused Brazil of pursuing politically motivated charges against Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2022 and is considered a close ally of Trump.

Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to more than 27 years in prison for an attempted coup.

According to the White House, the decision to lift the duties followed talks between Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Lula welcomed the decision, saying he was "happy" about the outcome. "These things will happen as we manage to gain people's respect," he said.
