Brussels, 4 July 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US General Alexus Grynkewich took over the second-highest role in NATO from his predecessor and compatriot Christopher Cavoli at a ceremony in Mons, Belgium on Friday.
A trained fighter pilot, Grynkewich most recently served as Director of Operations for the US Joint Staff, NATO said.
Grynkewich has "a deep understanding of the threats we face from the skies, and across other domains," said NATO Secretary Gerneral Mark Rutte.
"I know NATO can count on you to serve with the same steadfast resolve as your predecessors,” Rutte added.

The post of Supreme Allied Commander Europe (Saceur), based in the southern Belgian city of Mons, is considered the second most important in NATO after that of secretary general.
The incumbent has the decision-making power over military operations of the Western defence alliance.
The general is also responsible for military deployment planning and can deploy the forces required for operations within the framework of politically authorized orders.
Cavoli had held the top post for around three years.
Rutte thanked Cavoli for strengthening NATO's presence in the Baltic Sea, protecting underwater infrastructure and establishing a new command in Germany to bolster support for Ukraine.
