Urology Clinic performs total of 502 kidney transplants

Skopje, 31 January 2024 (MIA) - During a press briefing on Wednesday, Director Sasho Dohchev revealed that a total of 502 kidney transplantations have been successfully completed at the Urology Clinic.

“To date, a total of 502 transplantations have been performed, including 85 from cadaveric donors. He highlighted the significance of mentioning the three years during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period when transplantations were carried out with considerable risk to patients,” Dohchev said.

Health Minister Fatmir Mexhiti said that a milestone kidney transplantation was successfully carried out in December for a 25-year-old patient who was in a serious condition.

"I am especially pleased that, following the surgical procedure and the postoperative recovery, she is now in good health and gradually resuming her daily life activities," Mexhiti stated.

He also announced plans for the renovation of the Urology Clinic.

In response to the question about the number of patients on the waiting list, Professor Dr. Goce Spasovski explained that there are five pairs prepared for living-donor transplantation and around 120 individuals waiting for cadaveric kidney transplantation.
