UNHCR: number of migrants drowned or missing in Mediterranean is up
Athens, 12 August 2022 (dpa/MIA) - The number of migrants drowned or missing in Mediterranean has risen to 1,200 in the first half of the year, the the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has estimated. In addition, dozens of people have been missing since Wednesday after a boat sank south of the Greek island of Rhodes, the organization said in Athens on Friday. A boat about 15 metres long with migrants on board leaked and sank on Wednesday. So far 34 people have been rescued; 29 by the Greek and five by the Turkish coast guard, according to the UNHCR in Athens. Since those who were rescued gave conflicting information about the number of people on board the vessel, it is feared that many people have drowned. Survivors said there were between 60 and 80 people on board the vessel in question as it set off from a small port near the Turkish port city of Antalya.
