UN Security Council to discuss Israeli attack in Qatar

New York, 10 September 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The UN Security Council is set to convene an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss Israel's strike on the leadership of the Palestinian organization Hamas in Qatar, dpa learnt from diplomatic sources.

The session was requested by Algeria and other member states, according to the sources.

Hamas said six people were killed in the surprise attack in Doha on Tuesday, including the son of Khalil al-Hayya, the Islamist movement's most influential figure abroad, and his chief of staff.

Qatar condemned the strike as a "blatant violation of all international laws and norms" and a "serious threat to the security" of its population.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strike was a response to a deadly Hamas shooting in Jerusalem on Monday, in which two Hamas gunmen killed six people, and another assault on soldiers in Gaza.

Qatar, alongside Egypt and the United States, has been mediating in the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas, though ceasefire negotiations have been stalled for months.

Arab states denounced the attack. US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz were also among the world leaders who voiced criticism.
