Skopje, 5 August 2021 (MIA) - The Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA) is expected to announce whether or not Dukatos’ Snickers and Twix ice cream flavors will be taken off the Macedonian market. These two kinds of ice cream, as well as Dukatos’ currant-flavored fruit yogurt can no longer be purchased in Montenegro, BiH and Serbia. They’ve been recalled due to suspicion that they contain ethylene oxide, a pesticide. “As a contact point of the EU’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), we were notified last Tuesday that unsafe confectionary products have been imported that contain an additive in which ethylene oxide has been found. The additive in question is locust bean gum,” the Agency told MIA. In accordance with the established procedure for acting after such a notification, the FVA’s inspection services are inspecting two importers. “The amounts and kinds of imported products will be determined after the inspection controls, and we will define further directions,” the FVA said. The Snickers and Twix ice cream flavors, as well as the currant-flavored fruit yogurt were first recalled in Croatia, then in BiH and Serbia. According to Branislav Nedimović, Serbian Minister of Agriculture, some countries, such as Belgium, don’t consider these products harmful and they allow them to be sold. If the questionable items are approved, they will be returned to the market, the Montenegro Food Agency says. If not, they will be destroyed and the public will be informed. dk/ba/
