Tupancheski: Applying additional criteria for electing head of the Organised Crime Prosecution needed to achieve more objective results
Skopje, 9 November 2022 (MIA) - Justice Minister Nikola Tupanceski said Wednesday that for the election of the head of the Public Prosecutor's Office on Organised Crime and Corruption, several parameters remain that are not defined entirely and announced that they will move in the direction of changes in setting out stricter rules and criteria. “The census will have to be added to the election and whether there will be a need to introduce a second round of elections, but also whether there will be any additional criteria. In our country the main problem is not the quality of laws or legal framework, on the contrary we are facing the essential problem, which is the institutional capacity and the integrity of the people who are part of those institutions,” Tupancheski said. This, he said, is the third model in our country, and we are trying to achieve the right model in which external influences will be excluded in terms of the election of the head of the Public Prosecutor's Office on Organised Crime and Corruption. “For the first time, public prosecutors directly elect the head of the Prosecutor's Office, and we should not forget that the Law on Public Prosecution was adopted consensually by all stakeholders and that law was accepted by all and practically the model, which we tested the other day, in my opinion, showed certain shortcomings. What may need to be done in the future, since that model has not been completed, I think that if some additional criteria were applied in relation to the election of the prosecutor, we would achieve better results and a more objective election,” Tupancheski added. Asked to comment the photos that appeared in public with the head of the Public Prosecutor's Office and DUI officials, Tupancheski said photos somehow imply that the elected prosecutor has some connection or communication with representatives of a certain political party. “The most important thing in communication is time which will be the main factor that will show if these hypotheses or assumptions that are placed after his election really have a real basis. Communication cannot be excluded, but the most important thing is that the communication is not abused,” Tupancheski noted.
