Trump to meet Xi in South Korea at APEC summit later this year

Washington, 19 September 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump on Friday said he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping this autumn at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea.

The US leader made the announcement on his Truth Social platform following a phone conversation with Xi, saying he would travel to China early next year and expects a return visit from Xi.

"I just completed a very productive call with President Xi of China," Trump wrote. "We made progress on many very important issues including Trade, Fentanyl, the need to bring the War between Russia and Ukraine to an end, and the approval of the TikTok Deal."

"I also agreed with President Xi that we would meet at the APEC Summit in South Korea, that I would go to China in the early part of next year, and that President Xi would, likewise, come to the United States at an appropriate time," he added.

The United States and China are currently in a pause in their tariff dispute, which flared up in April when both countries threatened to impose tariffs of more than 100% on each other's goods.

In August, Trump signed an executive order to keep the pause in place until November 10. Beijing also announced an extension.

Trump met Xi several times during his first term in office. The two leaders met in person in Osaka, Japan, in 2019, while Xi travelled to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in 2017.

Xi criticized trade restrictions during the phone call.

According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, Xi said that the US should avoid unilateral trade restrictions so as not to jeopardize the results of the consultation rounds between the two sides.

But the talks were described as "positive" and "constructive."

Representatives from China and the US met this week in Madrid, Spain, for a fourth round of negotiations since the escalation of the tariff dispute in the spring.

Trump had been expected to announce a deal in the case of the Chinese social media platform TikTok, which has to sell its business in the US, after the phone call.

Chinese statements remained vague on the issue. According to Xinhua, Xi said that Beijing respects the wishes of companies and is in favour of them negotiating in accordance with market rules and finding balanced solutions that comply with China's laws.

China hopes that the US will offer Chinese companies investing there an open and non-discriminatory business environment.

A few days ago, the US government spoke of said a "framework for a TikTok deal" with China, where owner Bytedance has its headquarters.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Trump and Xi would seal the agreement during talks on Friday.
