Trump: Tariffs of 25% on Mexico and Canada to take effect on Tuesday

Washington, 28 February 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump said that tariffs of 25% on Mexican and Canadian goods will take effect on Tuesday, as he once again accused them of allowing illegal drugs to flow across the border.

"Drugs are still pouring into our Country from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.

"We cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA, and therefore, until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed TARIFFS scheduled to go into effect on MARCH FOURTH will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled," Trump added.

Trump had announced the sweeping tariffs against Mexico and Canada - the two largest trading partners of the United States - at the start of February.

But he then agreed to a 30-day pause after Mexican and Canadian leaders took steps to appease his anger about border security and drug trafficking.

There has been confusion over whether Trump was sticking to the March 4 date for the tariffs to kick in.

He added to the uncertainty on Wednesday when he told reporters the levies would not go into effect until April 2.

China, which already is hit by US tariffs, will be charged an additional 10% levy starting on March 4, Trump also said on Thursday.
