Trump says he backs vote to release Epstein files

Washington, 17 November 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump, who is under immense pressure to disclose all records related to the affair involving the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, on Sunday said Republicans in the House of Representatives "should vote to release the Epstein files."

"As I said on Friday night aboard Air Force One to the Fake News Media, House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files, because we have nothing to hide, and it's time to move on from this Democrat Hoax perpetrated by Radical Left Lunatics in order to deflect from the Great Success of the Republican Party, including our recent Victory on the Democrat 'Shutdown,'" Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

Epstein, who for years systematically abused minors, died in a New York jail in 2019 at the age of 66 in what officials ruled a suicide.

Especially in right-wing circles of US society, Epstein's death led to wild speculation despite official findings, because the financier had excellent contacts in US high society.

Trump has been under pressure to release the documents after pledging to do so during his campaign, with calls for full disclosure growing even within his own ranks.

Trump, on Sunday once again attempted to shift attention to former Democratic president Bill Clinton.

"The Department of Justice has already turned over tens of thousands of pages to the Public on 'Epstein,' are looking at various Democrat operatives (Bill Clinton, Reid Hoffman, Larry Summers, etc.) and their relationship to Epstein, and the House Oversight Committee can have whatever they are legally entitled to, I DON'T CARE," he said in the lengthy post.

A spokesman for Clinton stated years ago that the former US president, a Democrat, had not had anything to do with Epstein for more than a decade and knew nothing about the crimes.

A vote in the House of Representatives on the records is planned for next week, though the exact day is still unclear. If the lower chamber votes to disclose, the Senate and then Trump would have to greenlight the release for it to happen.

Representatives from both Trump's Republican Party and the Democratic Party have pushed for the vote.
