Turnberry, UK, 27 July 2025 (dpa/MIA) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump are to meet in Scotland on Sunday, a few days before the deadline for new high US tariffs on imports of EU products.
The meeting is to be held in Turnberry, where Trump spent Saturday playing golf, and comes after weeks of negotiations between Brussels and Washington.
Before leaving for Scotland, Trump reiterated that he saw the chances for an agreement at 50-50, echoing comments he made earlier. "We're meeting with the European Union, and that would be, actually the biggest deal of them all, if we make it."
Sunday's meeting comes days ahead of August 1, when Trump said he would impose tariffs of 30% on imports from the European Union for alleged trade imbalances.
However, the US president left open the option of waiving the higher tariff rate if the bloc opens more of its market to the US.
The EU has been trying to make an agreement with Washington for weeks in order to avoid tariff hikes on European products.
The meeting will give von der Leyen and Trump a chance to "take stock and consider the scope for a balanced outcome that provides stability and predictability for businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic," a spokeswomen for the commission president said.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently indicated that an agreement in the trade dispute could be imminent. The US president recently agreed with Japan on tariffs of 15% – significantly less than originally planned.
