Toshkovski: Several laws to be amended before Safe City system can become operational

Skopje, 5 July 2025 (MIA) - In order for the Safe City system to become operational, we will need to amend around six to seven laws, and a procedure has been launched for each of them, Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski said Saturday.

At a press conference held on occasion of the Government’s first year in office, Toshkovski said more rigorous measures would be implemented for traffic offenses, including the confiscation of vehicles.

“The Criminal Code is not directly related to the [Safe City] system but amending it and distinguishing between a crime and an offense is key so we can act preventively and reduce the number of traffic accidents and lives lost. The citizens should be aware that in the future there will be more rigorous measures for those who drive irrationally, i.e., we will move to confiscate the vehicles themselves,” Toshkovski said.

The Minister said similar systems have produced tangible results in other countries.

“This project was launched many years ago, and unfortunately it is still not operational. I think it was launched over ten years ago, it was upgraded by the previous government, and it has been further upgraded over the past year, and I hope we will finally be able to see results from it,” Toshkovski said.
