There are concrete signals that some opposition MPs would support constitutional amendments, Kovachevski says

Skopje, 11 May 2023 (MIA) - Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski said that there are concrete signals from the opposition in support of the constitutional amendments.

“There are concrete signals that some of these MPs would vote in favour of constitutional amendments. The procedure has started and will continue,” Kovachevski said in an interview with Kanal 5 TV Thursday evening.

According to him, the country is negotiating with the EU, not with Sofia.

“We are fulfilling our obligations within the negotiating framework. One of the conditions is the inclusion of other parts of nations in our Constitution, Montenegrins and Croats and Jews will also be included, this is a proposal. This is the first time in history that the blockade does not come from outside, but from inside,” Kovachevski said.

He reiterated that the obligation of every political party and every MP is to achieve the strategic goal of the state.

When asked if there will be 80 MPs for the constitutional amendments, Kovachevski said that he believes in achieving the goal and that he is working on it.

“But it also depends on all MPs. This is the moment when the door to EU membership is open. One man cannot hold us hostage. This process is not the process of one person, one party and one government. The opposition has the opportunity to join the European front,” Kovachevski added.

According to him, the procedure for the constitutional amendments has already started and will continue, which is supported by the USA and the EU.

Asked about the meeting with the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Kovachevski said that the US sent clear, direct, strong and indisputable support for Macedonian integration into the EU. In this regard, as he said, they discussed the challenge that the country faces, which is precisely the adoption of the amendments, with the aim of continuing the European path and opening the chapters.
