Ten killed in fire at care home in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Zagreb, 5 November 2025 (Hina/MIA) — Ten residents were killed in a fire that broke out on Tuesday evening at a care home for the elderly in Tuzla, northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, and around 20 people received medical treatment, according to preliminary information from the Ministry of the Interior of Tuzla Canton.

The fire, which started on the seventh floor, was quickly brought under control. Among the injured are also police officers, firefighters, medical staff and employees of the home.

Prime Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Nermin Nikšić expressed his condolences to the families, describing the tragedy as a disaster of enormous proportions.

"I live on the third floor. I looked out of the window and saw burning debris falling from above. I ran into the corridor. There are people on the upper floors who are bedridden," resident Ruža Kajić told public broadcaster BHRT, visibly shaken.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the fire. Authorities are working to provide temporary accommodation for the surviving residents.
